The article is devoted to the study of English protestant sermon using frame modeling technique. The article emphasizes peculiarities and effectiveness of using frames as a cognitive structure. It has been proved that the theory of frames enables linguists to identify and describe various phenomena through the cognitive analysis. Frame modeling uses interdisciplinary tools as well as integrates linguistic and extralinguistic knowledge. The article clarifies the content of the concept of the frame. It has been defined as specific mental construal, one of the methods to structure, schematize and represent linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge about English protestant sermon. The frame has been considered as a two-level model with vertex levels and terminal nodes (slots). Vertex levels are fixed and correspond to the things being always equitable in relation to the supposed situation. Terminal nodes (slots) are filled when the situation is actualized in the discourse. The article deals with the theory of five basic frames (S. A. Zhabotynska). This theory is based on the assumption that there are certain basic, fundamental conceptual structures used by our mind as a tool for information processing. These structures are represented by eighteen propositions referring to the five basic frames (the Thing Frame, the Action Frame, the Possession Frame, the Taxonomy Frame and the Comparison Frame). The modeling of the frame of English protestant sermon has been accomplished by identifying the main elements of the Thing and the Action Frames. The slots of the frame are: AGENT – the sender of the message, OBJECT/PATIENT – the recipient of the message, ACTION – the activity of the agent, INSTRUMENT – means by which the agent acts, GOAL and RESULT. The key slots of the Thing and Action frames of English protestant sermon and their verbalization have been determined. It has also been noted that some slots are lexically explicit, while the others can’t be verbalized. |
