ОБРАЗ ЄВРЕЇВ В МІСЬКОМУ ПРОСТОРІ ПІВДНЯ УКРАЇНИ У ПОДОРОЖНІХ ПУТІВНИКАХ МАНДРІВНИКІВ КІНЦЯ XVIII – ПЕРШОЇ ПОЛОВИНИ XIX ст.

Abstract

У даній статті характеризується образ міських євреїв Півдня України в подорожніх путівниках як російських, так і іноземних мандрівників наприкінці XVIII – XIX ст. Саме в цей час на території південноукраїнського регіону відбулись значні геополітичні зміни у зв’язку з інкорпорацією краю до складу Російської імперії. Наслідком цих процесів стало будівництво нових міст та колонізація земель представниками багатьох національностей. У тому числі, в містах Півдня України оселилося багато єврейського населення, для яких була встановлена межа осілості. З`явилося багато бажаючих особисто оцінити геополітичні зміни на Півдні України як серед російського населення, так й поміж іноземців. Саме в досліджуваний час край відвідали представники російської та іноземної аристократії, науковці, бізнесмени, комерсанти та прості люди, які залишили значну кількість подорожніх путівників, що стали одним із головних джерел з історії урбаністичних студій Півдня України. У своїх путівниках мандрівники ділилися не тільки загальними враженнями від побаченого, але й дрібними спостереженнями, які не зустрічаються в офіційних статистичних даних. Однією з головних тематик записок мандрівників став побут різних національностей, які проживали в містах Півдня України. Центральне місце в цих описах займають єврейські мешканці як одна з найбільших груп населення південноукраїнського регіону. У своїх описах мандрівники достатньо повно змалювали ритм життя та побут євреїв в містах Півдня України, охарактеризували їх заняття, образ життя, заняття, мрії та сподівання, комерційні та лихварські справи тощо. У результаті проведеного дослідження вдалося виявити розбіжності в описах іноземних та російських мандрівників щодо образу міських євреїв Півдня України протягом досліджуваного періоду. The paper characterizes the image of urban Jews of the South of Ukraine in the travel guide books of Russian and foreign travelers in the late 18th – 19th centuries. At that time considerable geopolitical changes caused by the incorporation of the region into the Russian Empire occurred on the territory of Southern Ukraine. Construction of new towns and colonization of the territories by the representatives of many nationalities were consequences of these processes. Many Jewish people with a determined limit of settlement inhabited the towns of the South of Ukraine as well. Among the Russian citizens and the foreigners there were many people willing to estimate the geopolitical changes in the South of Ukraine personally. At the time under study the region was visited by the representatives of Russian and foreign aristocrats, scientists, businessmen, merchants and ordinary people who left a great number of travel guide books being one of the main sources on the history of urban studies about the South of Ukraine. In their travel guide books the travelers shared not only general impressions about the things they saw, statistics, information about the historical past of the region, but also minor observations, which could not be found in the official statistical data. One of the main themes of the travelers’ notes was the mode of life of different nationalities living in the towns of the South of Ukraine. The central place in these descriptions is taken by the information about Jewish dwellers as one of the biggest groups of the population of Southern Ukrainian region. In their descriptions the travelers quite thor oughly depicted the rhythm and mode of life of Jews in the towns of the South of Ukraine. They described their occupation, daily routines, hopes and expectations, commercial and usury business etc. The results of this research allowed identifying divergences in the descriptions of the foreign and Russian travelers concerning the image of urban Jews in the South of Ukraine of the period under study.
