The article describes the views of prominent scientists of the late XIXth –early XXth centuries А. I. Sobolevskiy and А. А. Shakhmatov on controversial issues of methodology of studying of the history of Russian language (source of study; comparative, historical and comparative-historical methods; chronology of linguistic phenomena).
