Item DISPOSITIONAL OPTIMISTIC AND PESSIMISTIC MENTAL STATES OF YOUNG ATHLETES: GENDER DIFFERENTIATION(2023) Kurova, A.; Popovych, I. С.The purpose was to compare the researched parameters based on gender differentiation and to determine young athletes’ dispositional optimistic and pessimistic mental states. The study’s participants were young people aged 15 to 19 years (M=17.03; SD=±3.98), who regularly practiced sports and competed in all-Ukrainian and international sports tournaments. Respondents were divided into two groups based on gender: Group 1 – female representatives: handball, athletics (n=102; 55.74%); Group 2 – male representatives: football, freestyle wrestling, and weightlifting (n=81; 44.26%). Methods: valid and reliable psychodiagnostic methods used in sports research and standard purposeful non-participant observation. The following tests and coefficients were used to assess statistical reliability: Н-test of Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman correlation parameters (rs), ranking (Rg), and factor analysis ANOVA. Results. The Н-test of Kruskal-Wallis revealed differences in the studied parameters, disclosing that junior female athletes (Group 1) outperformed in (CN (H=7.717; p=.005), SSS (H=14.049; p=<.001) and PR (H=7.996; p=.005). Junior male athletes (Group 2) prevailed for GAL (H=9.041; p=.003) and DS (H=11.686; p=<.001). The correlation analysis revealed sixteen statistically significant associations. The ranking recorded the same first position in both samples: Group 1 – Op (Rg1; rs=.989) and Group 2 – Op (Rg1; rs=.982), and then the parameters were arranged differently. It was discovered that there was a statistically significant influence of negative relations of dispositional optimism/pessimism with protective mechanisms in stressful situations of the sports activity – Group 1: DS (Rg2; rs=-.982), CN (Rg4; rs=-.967), Ps (Rg9; rs=-.929) and Group 2: Ps (Rg7; rs=-.902). The subjects’ dispositional optimistic and pessimistic mental states were constructed into two-factor structures. The following mental states characterized the sample population of junior female athletes (Group 1): F1G1 – “Value-meaning disposition”; F2G1 – “Responsible and expected disposition”; F3G1 – “Protective-avoidant disposition”. A group of junior male athletes (Group 2) demonstrated the following mental states: F1G2 – “Value-meaning disposition”; F2G2 – “Responsible and expected disposition”; F3G2 – “Distant-confrontational disposition”. Conclusions. It is summarized that timely differentiation and identification of dominant mental states by coaching staff and athletes themselves can significantly increase sports psychological literacy, and affect not only local sports results but also the planning of a sports career and life position.Item DOMINANT MENTAL STATES IN JUNIORS’ COPING BEHAVIOR(2025) Kurova, A.; Popovych, I.; Shevchenko, N.; Lialiuk, G.; Chernyavska, T.; Kolly-Shamne, A.; Yaremchuk, V.; Shcherbak, T.; Попович, І. С.This study aims to identify the psychological correlations of defensive behavior and develop a factor structure of dominant mental states related to coping behavior in junior athletes. Methods: The sample included junior athletes aged 15–19 (M = 17.23; SD = ±3.43), participating in All-Ukrainian, European, and World championships (n = 119). Two validated psycho-diagnostic tools, previously tested on Ukrainian populations, were used to accurately capture the key research variables. Theoretical methods included retrospective analysis, generalization, comparative analysis, and interpretation. Empirical methods involved targeted observation and testing. Factorial ANOVA was applied to reduce the proportionality among research variables. Standard statistical procedures were also performed. Results: The methodological foundations were based on the concept of the athlete's personality as an open and dynamic system, taking into account psychophysiological and age- related growth patterns. The strongest direct correlation was found between “planning” and “emotional stability” (R = .841; p < .001), while the strongest inverse correlation was between “refusal” and “emotional stability” (R = –.838; p < .001). It was summarized that emotional stability is the most loaded and actualized characteristic in the research conditions. The factor structure of dominant mental states of junior athletes’ coping behavior was created. Eight factors were established (Σd = 86.293%): F1 “Self-blame coping behavior”, F2 “Sensitive coping behavior”, F3 “Dependent coping behavior”, F4 “Conscious coping behavior”, F5 “Tense coping behavior”, F6 “Confident coping behavior”, F7 “Safe coping behavior”, and F8 “Dreamy coping behavior”. It was summarized that diagnosing and interpreting dominant mental states of junior athletes’ coping behavior gave us a deeper insight into junior athletes’ psychology in crisis and extreme situations of life activities. Discussion and conclusions: It was empirically established and theoretically substantiated that dominant mental states of junior athletes’ coping behavior are active strategies of defensive behavior in critical situations of sporting activities. It was underscored that dominant mental states of coping behavior reflect the prevalent type of behavior in combination with the most pronounced personality traits that are actualized in the dimensions of defensive behavior. The research findings should be operationalized in the activities of sports subjects working in junior sports.Item PROPENSITY FOR ADVENTUROUSNESS IN THE MOTIVATIONAL STRUCTURE OF JUNIOR ATHLETES(2024) Popovych, I. С.This study aims to establish statistical correlations between the propensity for adventurousness and components of junior athletes' motivational structures. Methods: The sample consisted of juniors actively involved in competitive, training, and rehabilitative sports, regularly participating in competitions ranging from regional to international levels, including European, World, and Olympic events. The sample includes an equal number of male (n = 65; 50.00%) and female (n = 65; 50.00%) participants, as well as an equal representation from team sports (n = 65; 50.00%) and individual sports (n = 65; 50.00%), randomly selected. The size of the total sample was: n = 130 respondents aged from 17 to 19 years. The following descriptive characteristics were obtained: М = 18.38; SD = ±3.08; Мe = 18.50. The applied psycho-diagnostic tools tested in numerous studies on sports psychology, on junior samples are valid, reliable and representative. Results: Twenty-one statistically significant correlations of the parameters of propensity for adventurousness with motives for engaging in sports and thirty- four correlations with motives for achieving a sports result (p ≤ .050; p ≤ .010; p ≤ .001) were established using Spearman’s coefficient (rs). It was found that the parameters of propensity for adventurousness “emotional- motivational indicator of adventurousness” and “energy indicator of adventurousness” are the most dependent ones. It was explained by the fact that these components in junior athletes are a powerful mental resource which should be supported, developed and directed at volitional self-regulation. An algorithm for creating a profile of propensity for adventurousness was proposed. Discussion and conclusions: Comparison of the researched groups with a high level (Group 1) and a low level (Group 2) of propensity for adventurousness allowed summarizing that the athletes with a high level are guided by the desire for new sensations accompanied by adrenaline rush, frequent changes goals during sports competitions and by an immense desire for social self- affirmation. The athletes with a low level strive to improve sports skills, work on a procedural component accompanied by control, volitional efforts and self-regulation of sports behavior. It is recommended that the obtained results should be taken into consideration by coaches, psychologists and managers of sports institutions working with junior athletes.Item SELF-REGULATORY BEHAVIOR STYLES OF JUNIORS IN ACHIEVING WINNING OUTCOMES(2025) Popovych, I. С.The purpose of this study is to identify the dominant styles of self-regulatory behavior among junior athletes in their pursuit of winning outcomes. Methods: The research sample comprised juniors aged 15–19 who actively participated in sports and competed at various levels, ranging from regional contests to national championships and international tournaments. Statistical analysis involved empirical data collected from participants who had achieved success in individual sports and had won matches in team sports. The characteristics of the sample population are as follows: n = 154; М = 17.34; SD = ±3.51; Мe = 17.00. The key parameters of the styles of self- regulatory behavior, self-acceptance, the need for sports achievements, and self-efficacy in subject activity and interpersonal communication were determined using valid and reliable psychodiagnostic tools. Results. Pearson’s correlation coefficient (R) allowed for establishing thirteen direct correlations and one inverse correlation of the styles of self-regulation and self-acceptance with the parameters of a winning outcome (p ≤ .050; p ≤ .010). It was found that planning as a style of junior athletes’ self-regulatory activity has all significant direct correlations with the parameters of a winning outcome. It was established that independence is the most essential characteristic of self-regulation in sporting activities. The absence of correlations in the parameters “modeling” and “programming” does not reduce their value as self-regulation styles but rather reflects their formation in our population sample. Discussion and conclusions. It was substantiated that the research into the styles of junior athletes’ self-regulatory behavior in achieving a winning outcome is an examination of the psychological content parameters of managing one’s psycho-emotional state, which is achieved through verbal, visual, and behavioral means. It was noted that the parameter “evaluating sports results” has one correlation with the need for achievements and no correlation with the other two parameters – self-efficacy in subject activity and self-efficacy in interpersonal communication. It was explained that junior athletes, permanently evaluating their sports achievements, focus too much on their personality, strengths and weaknesses, which is accompanied by the work of defense mechanisms, which do not allow them to properly concentrate on the process of learning and training. It is recommended that the obtained empirical results and theoretical conclusions be used in the education and training process at sports schools for children and youth and junior academies functioning in professional teamsItem SPECIFICITY OF DECISION-MAKING IN JUNIOR ATHLETES WITH SIGNS OF MIXED ANXIETY-DEPRESSIVE DISORDER.(2026) Popovych, I. С.Background and purpose The aim is to study psychological content features of decision-making in junior athletes with signs of mixed anxiety-depressive disorder (MADD). Material and methods The research participants were students of sports schools for children and youth located in Ukraine’s regional centres. The survey involved junior athletes aged 15 to 19 who attended schools and regularly trained, with a total of n = 112 individuals representing teams U-15, U-17, and U-19. They had participated in and won sports competitions of different levels. The research employed valid and reliable psychodiagnostic tools tested across numerous sports samples. Results MADD signs were diagnosed in n = 21 (18.75%) respondents in the total sample. Two petal diagrams visualising the decision-making profiles of juniors with and without MADD signs were created. The combined matrix of correlations between decision-making parameters and mixed anxiety-depressive disorder demonstrated completely different trajectories of significant correlations and loadings of the key studied parameters. The productive coping strategy “vigilance” (three correlations) and the unproductive coping strategy “avoidance” (two correlations) were found to be the most dependent decision-making parameters, which are excessively sensitive to the signs of anxiety and depressiveness. The inverse correlations with the productive coping strategy “vigilance” demonstrated the critical importance of vigilance for junior athletes. No significant difference was found in the studied groups for the grouping variable “gender differentiation”. For the grouping variable “mixed anxiety-depressive disorder”, superiority of athletes with MADD signs was found in the non-productive coping strategy “avoidance”. Conclusions It was substantiated that mixed anxiety-depressive disorder signs can alternate, become more pronounced, and cause considerable discomfort, which is occasionally accompanied by body aches and gastrointestinal problems, which reduces the quality of life and is transformed into the coping strategy of decision avoidance. The study proposes measures for operationalising negative manifestations of anxiety caused by the dominant “avoidance” strategy by means of the diagnostic and corrective program for overcoming anxiety. It was recommended that the established scientific facts and significant differences should be integrated into professional training for teachers-coaches at sports schools for children and youth. Обґрунтування і мета Метою є дослідження психологічних змістових особливостей ухвалення рішень юними атлетами з ознаками тривожно- депресивного розладу (ТДР). Матеріал і методи Учасниками дослідження є вихованці дитячо-юнацьких спортивних шкіл, які розташовані в обласних центрах України. У опитуванні добровільно взяли участь юні спортсмени віком від 15 до 19 років, які навчалися і системно тренувалися, загальною кількістю n = 112 атлетів, що представляли команди U-15, U-17, U-19, були учасниками і переможцями різного рівня спортивних форумів. Застосовано валідний і надійний психодіагностичний інструментарій, який пройшов апробацію на численних спортивних вибірках. Результати Ідентифіковано ознаки ТДР у n = 21 (18.75%) досліджуваного загальної вибіркової сукупності. Побудовано дві пелюсткові діаграми профілів ухвалення рішень юніорів з ознаками і без ознак ТДР. Подано об’єднану кореляційну матрицю зв’язків параметрів ухвалення рішення з тривожністю та депресивністю, які продемонстрували абсолютно відмінну траєкторію достовірних зв’язків й навантажень ключових досліджуваних параметрів. Найбільш залежними параметрами ухвалення рішень є продуктивний копінг “пильність” (три зв’язки) і непродуктивний копінг “уникання” (два зв’язки), який є надмірно чутливими до проявів тривожності і депресивності. Обернені зв’язки з продуктивним копінгом “пильність” продемонстрували надмірну важливість сформованої властивості “пильність” у юних атлетів. За групуючою змінною “Статеве диференціювання” достовірних відмінностей у досліджуваних групах не зафіксовано. За групуючою змінною “Тривожно-депресивний розлад” встановлено перевагу атлетів з ознаками ТДР за непродуктивним копінгом “уникання”. Висновки Обґрунтовано, що ознаки тривожно-депресивного розладу можуть чергуватися, набувати вираженості, викликати значний дискомфорт, який почасти супроводжується тілесними больовими відчуттями, проблемами кишково-шлункового тракту, що позначається на зниженні якості життя і трансформується у копінг-стратегію уникання ухвалення рішення. Запропоновано заходи операціоналізації негативних проявів тривоги, зумовлених домінуючою стратегією “уникання”, засобами програми діагностично-корекційного подолання тривоги.
