The article examines the process of formation and development of the academic repertoire for solo saxophone from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century. The main stages of the instrument’s evolution in the academic context are identified: from the first transcriptions of works written for other instruments to the creation of original compositions that reflected the stylistic diversity of the 20th–21st centuries. The significance of the saxophone as a universal instrument that combines academic traditions with the innovative explorations of contemporary composers is emphasized.
