Abstract
This article examines the concept of unnatural narrative in
Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun through the lens of cognitive
narratology and cognitive poetics. The authors analyze narrative structures,
cognitive perception strategies, and the ontological characteristics of the novel’s
storyworld elements, as well as the representation of artificial intelligence in the
role of the narrator.
The study relies on interdisciplinary methods of text analysis, including
unnatural narratology, cognitive textual analysis, and conceptual metaphor
theory, which allow for the identification of the features in the construction of the
narrative world and processes of reader’s interpretation.
Particular attention is paid to three key aspects of unnatural narrative: (a)
the unnatural storyworld, which combines naturalistic and non-mimetic elements;
(b) the unnatural mind of the narrator, functioning according to the principles of
the artificial intelligence; and (c) unnatural acts of narration, encompassing
syntactic and stylistic peculiarities, role-based naming, and affective neutrality.
The authors demonstrate how readers’ cognitive mechanisms, especially
preconceptual perception and metaphorical thinking, contribute to the
“naturalization” of unnatural elements and shape both emotional and cognitive
responses of the reader to the text.
The article also considers methods for interpreting unnatural narrative,
including the use of experiential schemas (frames), thematic analogies,
allegorical and archetypal approaches, as well as combined cognitive-narrative
strategies. The study shows that Ishiguro’s novel exemplifies a contemporary
unnatural narrative capable of integrating empathetic perception, emotional
impact, and non-mimetic narrative form.
